To perform this experiment all crew members except doctors were taught to manage medical emergencies in most often extraordinary situations connected with human life hazard: heart attack, burns, hypovolemic shock, etc. Then all these crew members were divided in two groups. During isolation one group will refresh their knowledge using videocourses, second group will not have such course. Two crew doctors are responsible for the organization of the experiment and for the estimation of the effectiveness of crew actions. The level of remaining knowledge will be evaluated with written check tests and with imitated extraordinary situations when the crew must “resuscitate” special mannequin.
According to preliminary data both groups have been succeeded in managing with given situation.
The distance between the Earth and space vehicle is 1 457 000 km and the distance between space vehicle and Mars is 279 657 000 km.

One can make such conclusion watching how the preparation to scientific experiments is carried out and how the crew eat and spend free time together. To this moment in spite of some language troubles the volunteers have formed single group working effectively. In some degree that was caused by high motivation of the crew to the successful mission performing and by the professional psychological support.
Besides, the volunteers soaked themselves in detailed work for scientific program of the Project.
Crew members had to carry out scientific experiments without direct help of curators and principal investigators of these experiments. Sometimes insignificant troubles occurred during some scientific programs. Most often they were connected with defaults in operating manuals (there were no description of extraordinary work of the devices) or with the software using different versions of Windows. The crew coped with all this difficulties: in result of their work for finding out and solving problems practically all scientific programs were realized with high level of motivation and professionalism. So, planned extent of investigations was performed. And the crew obtained additional experience which would help to avoid stress in case of extraordinary situations during experimental procedures in future.
It is also important that the crew is getting used to live in enclosed space of limited volume in medical-technical facility
The volunteers begin to adapt to living in the facility; they know the location of necessary equipment, consumables and food; every Saturday they clean the facility.
Monitoring of the crew physical state shows that the state of all crew members remains at control levels.

The detailed medical control was performed. It included both examination by the doctors and some procedures controlling main systems of an organism (for example, EEG and loading test). Tests show that physical working capacity remains at baseline level. That means that volume and quality of food, performed work, adequate mode of the rest and normal parameters of the living space allow keeping the health of the crew up to the mark.
Finally, the first month of isolation shows that at this stage selected crew is the single effectively working team with the stable physical state of each member.

NVIDIA Corporation has been selected for audio and video communication between a group of landing and the crew on orbit in 3D mode. As the solution for experiencing stereoscopic 3D graphics, 3D Vision will help the cosmonauts immerse themselves in a virtual Martian reality, as well as relax during their leisure time. The depth and quality of graphics made possible the experiment reproduce the psychological effects of key mission operations, from blast-off and landing to expeditions on the planet’s surface.

At first days of the isolation the attention were focused on studying of cardio-respiratory system – the crew began to perform special programs of physical trainings using special technical tools, including strength trainer, running track, bicycle ergometer, hand grip.
Also various psychological tests were performed, using both Russian methods and standard ESA programs,

in which a crew members’ capability to adaptation were evaluated and their group compatibility was checked.
On 11 day of the flight the spaceship undocked from the orbital facility and began spinning in Earth's gravitational field to enter the heliocentric orbit. On 14 day of the flight the distance between the spaceship and Earth is 71 000 km., and between the spaceship and Mars – 316 540 000 km.

On April 27 trainings were conducted of the participants of "Mars-500" experiment at the "Paraflighter" test-bench of Scientific-production enterprise "Aeroecology" near Tushinskiy aerodrome.
The training device is based on the principle of air-tube dispatch and consists of a vertical channel and a platform, where the investigators stand. Their task is balancing the platform in the air flow and maximally fast rising to the maximum height. Having learnt this skill, they were able to perform different evolutions, fly in the vertical channel, fall down sharply and rise to the height of about 6 meters.
The objective of the training was as follows:
- increase of the level of neuro-psychic stability of the participants of the experiment,
- studying of their stress-reactions,
- studying of efficiency and peculiarities of pair interaction during interdependent activity and individual tactics of their behaviour.
The training was conducted by the head of the department of psychology and psycho-physiology of the institute, Doctor of medical sciences, professor, honoured physician of the RF Yuriy Bubeev.

In the framework of the project "Mars-500" , the company "Kortes", ISV-partner of Motorola in Russia, delivered the system of address calculation of commodities and materials "Kortes: Address storehouse" and accompanying equipment for this system. Using special terminals of data collection of Motorola, members of the international crew during all 520-days of the experiment will be able without difficulty to find necessary things in the catalogue, determine their place of storage, calculate the used things, move them between the cells, and also conduct inventory and discard unfit for use things.

During two days, from March 17 to 18, on the territory of JSC "Scientific-production enterprise Zvezda" trying on was conducted of the space suits "Orlan-E" that will be used in 520-day experiment for imitation of going to the Martian surface.
"Orlan-E" space suit is a special lightweight modification of the space suit "Orlan-M" designed for "Mars-500" project. It does not have a real life support system - it was substituted with the ventilation system (that in conditions of simulation allows to work during several hours).

During two days, from March 10 to 11, on the territory of the recreation facility of the Russian state university of physical culture "Pokrovskaya" in Odintsovo region trainings were held on surviving of the candidates for participation in 520-day isolation.
The investigators were divided into two groups, 5 and 6 people in each. The first group was headed by 43-year old leading engineer-investigator of Gagarin's CTC Boris Egorov, the second group was headed by the senior inspector-diver of the same CTC 37-year old Mikhail Sinelnikov.
Before sending the candidates to the trial, in the Institute of physical culture special instruction was held, where all the candidates trained to provide emergency medical help. To survive in the cold and snowy forest the investigators were given all the necessary things - matches, lamps, knives, axes and parachute. Besides the knowledge that they got during the instruction, special clothes provided by the Russian company NovaTour helped them not to get frozen in the snow.
The surviving trainings included several tasks, such as:
- wigwam building (the first group) or single-ended tent (the second group),
- making a signal fire,
- overnight stop, íî
- transportation of the wounded to the agreed upon place,
- preparation of the site for the helicopter.
The head of the surviving program -head of the psychology department of IBMP Yuriy Bubeev.
In the frameworks of preparation for 520-day isolation in IBMP a meeting was held of the volunteers with the Russian Grand master, ex-champion of the world Anatoly Karpov. Anatoly Evgenievich got familiar with the volunteers and read a general awareness-raising lecture on chess.
The director of A. E. Karpov's chess school, Vladimir Kraushkin, will teach the candidates all the nuances of the game.
During 520-day isolation, in the frameworks of psychological support of the crew, a tournament between Anatoly Karpov and the team of the Martian ship will be conducted.
On February 25 Institute of biomedical problems has visited representatives of German aerospace agency (DLR) - director of space programs Christoph Hohage, specialist on international cooperation Rainder Scharenberg, program manager Peter Graf and manager Michael Turk visited Institute for biomedical problems. The aim of the visit was familiarization with the ground-based experimental facility "Mars-500".
