12.08.2011

12.08.2011

On August, 14 Mars500 crew will overpass point of 438 days.
This date is significant because it is just the same period of time (more accurately - 437 days 17 hours 59 minutes) that our space physician Valeriy Polyakov (instructor-cosmonaut-researcher from the IBMP cosmonaut corps) spent in weightlessness at the board of orbital station “Mir”. By the way, up to now this record registered in Guinness Book of World Records was not broken.
Polyakov was working at Russian station “Mir” since January 8, 1994 till March 22, 1995 ã. He succeeded in performing of more than 1,5 thousand of unique researches in the field of space medicine, physiology and psychology during 437 days 17 hours 59 minutes in the frame of 15th, 16th è 17th missions and came back to Earth save and sound.
Russian life-support system of long-term flights that was tested at the station “Mir” is used now as a basis at International Space Station (ISS).
Effectiveness of Valeriy Polyakov`s work at the orbit was facilitated also by regular prophylactic measures focused on maintenance of cosmonauts` physical activity. This is intensive physical exercises with the use of exercise devices (treadmill, veloergometer, expanders), wearing of loading suit “Penguin”, the use of suit “Chibis”, ultraviolet irradiation, control of nutrition.
It should be noted that the flight of space physician Polyakov is comparable to Martian mission in flight duration (in view of present possibilities of space technology). And strict execution of recommendations of doctors and other specialists allowed him to adapt quickly to Earth gravity even after 15-month exposure to weightlessness.

Simulation of off-nominal situation imitating high level of crew autonomy
Today at 12.00 simulation of off-nominal situation imitating high level of crew autonomy was finished. “High autonomy” means very long period of time (one week – in this case) when the crew draws up daily schedule by themselves as well as makes decisions on realization of experimental program.
High autonomy is considered to be possible during interplanetary flights and could be caused by physical factors (for example, solar flare can induce rather long-term full interruption of crew-Earth communication). Undoubtedly, this is very serious stress-factor and investigation of it in the frame of “Mars-500” project is very actual and significant for science.
It was shown in studies of Grigoriev A.I. et al. (2004) that high autonomy could be a factor which positively influences on operative activity, mood of crewmembers, volition to make decisions independently and to input some proposals. At the same time features of communication in circuit “crew-mission control centre” are not well-learnt. Particularly, one can suggest that in case of long termination of communication crew can fill lack of control over the situation as well as breathes freely because of lack of control.
Before this off-nominal situation the crew was informed that because of the breaks of communication the communicational nets would not work during one week, and the communication with them was stopped.
For the performing of this experiment ground-based services stopped to transfer radiograms, video messages, personal letters and informational news sets. Telemedical system was also switched off. But emergency communication and cameras of video monitoring were not switched off for reasons of crew safety.
Individual actigrafs, video monitoring and questionnaires were used to investigate reactions of the crew and mission control center on this off-nominal situation.

Information on some of the experiments within the scientific program of "Mars-500"
Experiment «Influence of Regenerative Life-Support System Design Features on the Crew’s Service Efficiency in Mars-500 experiment with use Hardware/Software Complex for System Operation Service Crew».
One of the basic problems, which restrict implementation of interplanetary flights, is a guarantee of reliability and safety of the onboard system operation and, first of all, Integrated Life Support Systems (ILSS) in conditions autonomous manned spaceflight.
Real participation of test subjects in the real system service is extremely complicated and economically unprofitable. More rational approach is the virtual simulator application of separate systems incorporated in the uniform Hardware/Software Complex for System Operation Service Crew (hscsocs).

In a period of time from 13:00 of December, 01 until 14:00 of December, 02 the off-nominal situation imitating the short circuit and fire in central switchboard which provide the whole medical-technical facility with electric power was simulated.
At 13.00 the fire alarm signal went to the panel of fire alarm system. From this time the activities of the duty team were regulated by the “Instruction for the activities of the duty team in emergency situation and in case of fire”.
At 13:02 the simulated source of the fire (central switchboard) was deenergized. From this moment all life-support, monitoring and control systems of the facility stopped working. Only emergency illumination and emergency communication were working. The duty doctor informed the crew about off-nominal situation using emergency communication line. Further activities of the crew were determined by the Instruction “Activities of the crew during the fire”. According to this instruction the crew moved to the farthest department from the source of fire (the department of freezing chambers) and was waiting for the signal to possible evacuation. About two hours later the emergency illumination stopped working and the crew used personal portable lanterns. About three hours later the powering of one freezing chamber was provided and the illumination was restored. The crew transferred all deep-freezing products into working chamber. In four hours the step-by-step switching on of the life-support systems launched. By 23:00 of December, 1 energizing of life-support systems had finished. At 12:00 of December, 2 operational integrity of server was restored, the possibility to send video messages and radiograms was provided. At 14:00 of December, 2 the energizing of the facility was completely restored. Since this moment the facility was ready to further performing of the experiment according to the program.
Upon completion of the off-nominal situation the crew was informed that this situation was simulated.
CO2 concentration did not exceed 0,85 %, O2 concentration did not decrease below 19,5 %.
Now the activities of the duty team and the crew during off-nominal situation are being analyzed.

02.12.2010

December, 1 the training on the try-out of the off-nominal situation for the crew of Mars-500 Project as well as for ground-based services, which ensure the safe implementation of the experiment, started. Off-nominal situation led to avalanche-like breakdown of the systems supporting life and work of the crew in experimental conditions. This situation is unexpected for the crew and could occur both on board of Mars-based space station and on board of space vehicle during interplanetary mission.
The plan of the off-nominal situation:
  • fire occurs as a result of the short circuit in the central switchboard which provide the whole medical-technical facility with electric power;
  • fire leads to energy tripping in medical-technical facility and, as a consequence, breakdown of life-support systems in experimental modules.
The program of try-out of this situation includes the evacuation of ground-based personnel (until the fire suppression), preparation of the Mars-500 crew to the possible evacuation, fire suppression with subsequent step-by-step repairing of life-support systems and the activities of the crew on the elimination of off-nominal situation consequences inside the modules.
To maintain the working capacity and health of the crew members for the continuation of the experiments on Mars-500 program the constant video monitoring of the crew actions and the control of environmental parameters was implemented during the try-out of the off-nominal situation.
At this moment program has been completed. A large data amount was obtained and it is analyzed now. The results will be published in the nearest future.

We are starting to publish information on some of the experiments within the scientific program of "Mars-500"
The Experiment “BIORASCAN”. Remote measurements of breathing parameters.
To provide an effective prophylaxis of sleeping disorders during the prospective flight to Mars it is necessarily to diagnose in time development of the examinees disorder and take measures. By means of bioradiolocation it is possible to control changes in movement activity, breathing and heart pulse parameters of cosmonauts during sleep without any physical contact with the examinee (it does not disturb examinee). Ongoing experiments are directed to the creation of such diagnostic methods. It is important to investigate the possibility of a remote respiration monitoring for cosmonauts during sleep, which is essential for both cosmic physiology and medicine and for terrestrial medicine. The results of such research may be the basis for creation of remote sleep disorders (apnea and hypopnea) diagnostics methods.

Today is important crucial point in the life and work of the crew because voice communication sessions will be completely ceased since the 26th of July.
We change over to batch communication with gradual (stepwise) increment of the delays of communication. Batch communication means video-voice messages to the crew and similar answers. It can be used for the implementation of difficult experiments, for regular medical control and for psychological support. In addition to this the communication with the crew via electronic messages will be kept.

Today the first session of the experiment “Medical skill maintenance during long duration space flight: performance of management of medical emergencies regarding isolation and loss of knowledge over time” realized jointly by IBMP and ESA have been carried out.
This experiment has following purposes:
  • to test developed behavioral algorithm in extraordinary situations connected with human health and life hazard,
  • to investigate the efficiency of system for the estimation of supposed loss of skills,
  • to estimate the effectiveness of prophylactic measures for preventing the loss of these skills.
To perform this experiment all crew members except doctors were taught to manage medical emergencies in most often extraordinary situations connected with human life hazard: heart attack, burns, hypovolemic shock, etc. Then all these crew members were divided in two groups. During isolation one group will refresh their knowledge using videocourses, second group will not have such course. Two crew doctors are responsible for the organization of the experiment and for the estimation of the effectiveness of crew actions. The level of remaining knowledge will be evaluated with written check tests and with imitated extraordinary situations when the crew must “resuscitate” special mannequin.
According to preliminary data both groups have been succeeded in managing with given situation.

One can make such conclusion watching how the preparation to scientific experiments is carried out and how the crew eat and spend free time together. To this moment in spite of some language troubles the volunteers have formed single group working effectively. In some degree that was caused by high motivation of the crew to the successful mission performing and by the professional psychological support.
Besides, the volunteers soaked themselves in detailed work for scientific program of the Project.
Crew members had to carry out scientific experiments without direct help of curators and principal investigators of these experiments. Sometimes insignificant troubles occurred during some scientific programs. Most often they were connected with defaults in operating manuals (there were no description of extraordinary work of the devices) or with the software using different versions of Windows. The crew coped with all this difficulties: in result of their work for finding out and solving problems practically all scientific programs were realized with high level of motivation and professionalism. So, planned extent of investigations was performed. And the crew obtained additional experience which would help to avoid stress in case of extraordinary situations during experimental procedures in future.
It is also important that the crew is getting used to live in enclosed space of limited volume in medical-technical facility
The volunteers begin to adapt to living in the facility; they know the location of necessary equipment, consumables and food; every Saturday they clean the facility.
Monitoring of the crew physical state shows that the state of all crew members remains at control levels.
Highslide JS

photo: IBMP
The detailed medical control was performed. It included both examination by the doctors and some procedures controlling main systems of an organism (for example, EEG and loading test). Tests show that physical working capacity remains at baseline level. That means that volume and quality of food, performed work, adequate mode of the rest and normal parameters of the living space allow keeping the health of the crew up to the mark.
Finally, the first month of isolation shows that at this stage selected crew is the single effectively working team with the stable physical state of each member.

On April 27 trainings were conducted of the participants of "Mars-500" experiment at the "Paraflighter" test-bench of Scientific-production enterprise "Aeroecology" near Tushinskiy aerodrome.
The training device is based on the principle of air-tube dispatch and consists of a vertical channel and a platform, where the investigators stand. Their task is balancing the platform in the air flow and maximally fast rising to the maximum height. Having learnt this skill, they were able to perform different evolutions, fly in the vertical channel, fall down sharply and rise to the height of about 6 meters.
The objective of the training was as follows:
  • increase of the level of neuro-psychic stability of the participants of the experiment,
  • studying of their stress-reactions,
  • studying of efficiency and peculiarities of pair interaction during interdependent activity and individual tactics of their behaviour.
The training was conducted by the head of the department of psychology and psycho-physiology of the institute, Doctor of medical sciences, professor, honoured physician of the RF Yuriy Bubeev.

During two days, from March 10 to 11, on the territory of the recreation facility of the Russian state university of physical culture "Pokrovskaya" in Odintsovo region trainings were held on surviving of the candidates for participation in 520-day isolation.
The investigators were divided into two groups, 5 and 6 people in each. The first group was headed by 43-year old leading engineer-investigator of Gagarin's CTC Boris Egorov, the second group was headed by the senior inspector-diver of the same CTC 37-year old Mikhail Sinelnikov.
Before sending the candidates to the trial, in the Institute of physical culture special instruction was held, where all the candidates trained to provide emergency medical help. To survive in the cold and snowy forest the investigators were given all the necessary things - matches, lamps, knives, axes and parachute. Besides the knowledge that they got during the instruction, special clothes provided by the Russian company NovaTour helped them not to get frozen in the snow.
The surviving trainings included several tasks, such as:
  • wigwam building (the first group) or single-ended tent (the second group),
  • making a signal fire,
  • overnight stop, íî
  • transportation of the wounded to the agreed upon place,
  • preparation of the site for the helicopter.

At the present time for forming of food rations of the crews of space ships and stations, specially developed for these purposes products are used in the package allowing to cook food in conditions of weightlessness (to warm in an electrical food heater and restore dehydrated products with hot or cold water).

One of the main distinctive peculiarities of the developed for “Mars-500” project ration is its long-term autonomy. From this an objective follows of creation of food rations preserving biological full-value and microbiological safety during the whole duration of the experiment (520 days) for the crew consisting of 6 people taking into account impossibility of additional delivery of food stores.

On February 25 in IBMP degustation session began, the aim of which is presentation for assessment of the investigators of the whole assortment of products, from which it is supposed to create individually-oriented food ration for the crew.

Doctor Alexandr Agureev (head of the department of nutrition in IBMP and the head of works on nutrition in “Mars-500” project) informed the investigators about the fact that in the given experiment for each stage of the experiment its own variant of food ration would be used:
The stage of simulation of the flight to Mars. The ration is formed from the products (including semi-finished products of dishes), manufactured by a series of European firms («Apetito», «Kellogg», «Hipp», «Coppenrath», «Enervit», «Knorr»). This part of the ration is supervised by German scientist Doctor Jens Titze from the University in Erlangen.
The stage of landing to Mars. The second variant of the ration will have 2 kinds. For the three crew members who will simulate descent and going to the Martian surface, the food ration will be formed from the products ready for consumption without heating and it will only foresee consumption of hot drinks. For these purposes real space products used during forming of food ration for the crews of transportation vehicle “Soyuz” are most suitable.  The rest three crew members who will simulate flight on the Martian orbit, will eat the ration of the first and third variants.
The most difficult task is forming of the 3rd variant of food ration for the stage of simulation of the flight from Mars to Earth. It is connected with the fact that the main mass of products for cosmonauts has shelf life in temperature conditions of the environment from 1 to 2 years. However, assortment of products having 2-year shelf life is extremely limited.

In 520-day experiment this food ration will be formed from products produced by food enterprises of Korea, Italy, China and Russian (“Gala-Gala” firm and enterprises of food industry Michurinsk city).
