Influence of Regenerative Life-Support System Design Features on the Crew’s Service Efficiency in Mars-500 experiment with use Hardware/Software Complex for System Operation Service Crew

One of the basic problems, which restrict implementation of interplanetary flights, is a guarantee of reliability and safety of the onboard system operation and, first of all, Integrated Life Support Systems (ILSS) in conditions autonomous manned spaceflight.

Real participation of test subjects in the real system service is extremely complicated and economically unprofitable. More rational approach is the virtual simulator application of separate systems incorporated in the uniform Hardware/Software Complex for System Operation Service Crew (hscsocs). This product was designed by JSC “NIIchimmash”.

The HSCSOCS structure consists of:

  • Virtual Simulators of individual systems partially closed to oxygen and water regeneration complex LSS based on physico-chemical processes of regeneration metabolic products of the crew, and interacting with complex aircraft systems for ensuring thermal regime and energy, as well as electromechanical simulator regular oxygen generation system, "Elektron-VM”.
  • The main routine that simulates the changing of parameters in the crew‘s environment.
  • Subroutine of the mass and energy exchange generation between with the crew and the environment.
  • Subroutine of off-nominal situations identification and the effectiveness of operator actions estimation.
  • Subroutine of psycho-physiological condition estimation of the operators before, during and after the ONS localization.

In the HSCSOCS there are several working places:

  • Operator’s workplace 1, which allows operators to work with the base part of the complex;
  • Operator’s workplace 2, which allows operators to work with the training device “Electron-VM”
  • Instructor’s workplace, which is located in a central command post.

HSCSOCS provides:

  • visual information about values of controlled parameters of the environment and the technical condition of each system.
  • formation of ONS from Instructor’s workplace.
  • scheduled operation  and ONS localization by crew members from Operator’s workplace 1.
  • working with the training device “Electron-VM”
  • monitoring of psycho physiological parameters of the operators during HSCSOCS  operation

The main purpose of the experiment under Mars-500 project with the HSCSOCS used is an efficiency estimation of service by crew of IRLSS separate systems operation. For achievement of the given purpose the following problems should be solved:

  • Estimation of sufficiency of the controllable parameters list of for the analysis of functioning and servicing on the basis of use of the HSCSOCS and an electrical trainer of the Electron-VM integrated in the HSCSOCS in conditions of long autonomous mission;
  • Estimation of efficiency of activity of the operator on localization of the off-nominal situations arising at functioning of systems and/or deviations of the environment controllable parameter values from prescribed values;
  • Estimation of efficiency of acceptance of independent solutions crewmembers at the ONS localization;
  • Estimation of efficiency of ways of display of the information on values of the environment controllable parameters at the analysis of functioning and servicing with use of virtual simulators of systems;
  • Estimation of the ONS localization influence on the mental and physiological condition of crewmembers in conditions of long autonomous mission.

Estimation of efficiency of activity of the operator depends on degrees of complexity of ONS, time of reaction on ONS, attentiveness of crew during ONS localization, total amount of the activities considering total of solved tasks, including monitoring of functioning of systems, activity with an electrical simulator and realization of maintenance, formation dynamics of activities. Stresses and presences of distracting factors are considered.

During 105-days isolation experiment 52 tasks were set up (with “Electron-VM” trainings). 51 tasks were successfully solved.

Hardware-engineering complex Biomouse for carrying out of psycho-physiological examinations is actuated in a structure of the HSCSOCS hardware for monitoring of the given parameters. Biomouse allows estimating function-ability of the person, its actual mental and physiological condition, to supervise dynamics of conditions of the person, his person, reserves, to reveal conditions of stress and mental intensity. Biomouse software is implemented approach based on the analysis of cordial rhythm variability.
