ESA to Perform Scientific Experiments on “Mars-500”

Russian Institute of Medical and Biological Problems and European Space Agency agreed on performing 15 scientific experiments on Russian terrestrial test laboratory “Mars-500”, which simulates manned flight to Mars.

Officials say that the contract will be signed in the end of May – beginning of June 2008. End of April will see a meeting of experts, responsible or performing scientific experiments within second 150-day part of “Mars-500” experiment, in Cologne of Germany.

Russian scientists will select from 8 to 24 European volunteers out of 38 submitted applications with medical files. Final selection results in four people, two of which will enter main crew of terrestrial Martian expedition and other two will be backup persons. Experiment’s crew will consist of 4 Russians and 2 Europeans.
